As the human global population is growing and more and more people can live in cities, not only the treatment of pollution is of high concern, but the space is limited. Today, many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are old in Sweden and need to scale up their capacity to meet the future demands, either in terms of load capacity, or stricter effluent demands. The owners of the WWTPs are most often the municipalities; the decision makers. To make an informed, weighted and fair choice, they need scientific knowledge, comparisons and applied research. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a biofilm system in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) that is more energy efficient and compact compared to other treatment methods. In my research project, the goal is to fill the knowledge gap of AGS in full-scale. I hope that the results from this study will help decision makers in regions with colder climate (Sweden) to better understand if AGS can be beneficial at their site. </div> <div>In this interim seminar, the results of one study will be discussed, and shortly ongoing studies will be presented. In study 1, the start-up of the first Nereda® processes in the Nordic countries was described and evaluated. Two AGS reactors were built at the Österröd WWTP in Strömstad and were started up in June 2018. One reactor was seeded with activated sludge, and one with aerobic granules. The performances of the reactors varied greatly the first year and started to work well first in October 2019. In the autumn, winter and early spring of the first year of operation, the load of nitrogen was higher than the design load, the flows were high and the temperature low. Small granules were formed in the reactor seeded with activated sludge (R1) and the granules from the granular inoculum in the other reactor (R2) were retained in the reactor. After more than 8 months of operation, the sludge in R1 was to a large extent still floccular and did not settle as fast as the granules in R2. R1 was therefore re-seeded with granules from R2 to increase the process performance. In September and October 2019, the denitrification and phosphorus removal were showing good performances resulting in low effluent concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. </div> <div>The ongoing studies are an evaluation of another full-scale WWTP with optimised operation of an SBR process, a lab-scale study of the influence of low temperature on AGS and a full-scale comparison of AGS and AS. The presentation will introduce the area and highlight research challenges and solutions mainly focusing on statistical non-rigid variation simulation. For non-rigid variation simulation, Monte Carlo simulation is combined with finite element analysis the behavior of compliant components and assemblies. The simulation needs to capture how part variation propagates through an assembly, and how the fixturing and joining processes affect the result. To achieve high accuracy in the simulation as many as possible of the phenomena affecting the result in reality must be included, while keeping simulation time down. Over the past three decades we have seen significant improvement in areas like under five mortality and getting children into primary schools. Yet progress is deeply uneven and an estimated one in six children lived in extreme poverty before the Covid- pandemic. Many governments have responded to the pandemic with fiscal stimulus packages to protect jobs and incomes but some are already cutting down on government spending including on child-focused social services such as health and education. Sound policies and investments are needed to safeguard progress on reducing child poverty and vulnerability.</p><strong>​</strong><span><strong>This lunch-webinar, between 12:00 and 13:00 (CET), will focus on favorable policies and investments in children in the context of middle-income countries with presentations by Adel Daoud, University of Gothenburg and Andrés Franco, UNICEF. </strong><br /> <br /> <b>Machin</b><b></b><b></b><b>e learning for analysing the impacts of International Monetary Fund (IMF) policies on child poverty - what have we learned?</b> <br /> Adel Daoud has studied the impacts of IMF policies on child poverty using machine learning. Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence and can be described as the study of computer algorithms that improve automatically through experience. Often due to sovereign debt crises, many governments apply for IMF loans. However, this lending is conditional on making adjustments to economic policies. These adjustments are often restrictive, that is, they cut government spending and thereby resulting in austerity affecting children adversely. <br /> Adel Daoud, PhD from the Department of Sociology at GU was recently awarded a large research grant from the Swedish Research Council involving the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers and Cambridge University to study the effects of on children's lives. <br /><br /> <b>The</b><b></b><b></b><b> impact of Covid-19 on children - emerging evidence and policy options</b> <br /> UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunties to reach their full potential. Andrés Franco leads UNICEF's work on multilateral partnerships and engagements around policy and fundraising. His presentation will include reports and initial evidence of impact, policy options and discuss the roles of governments, civil society, the international community, academia and the private sector to protect children from the harmful effect of rising poverty and inequality.
