​​Xiaoshan Huang och Anna Holmlund: Contextualizing linear equations with rational numbers in simulation intervention
Abstract: Through simulations as interventions in vocational classes in secondary schools we want to see how students respond to two different contexts for linear equations with rational numbers (e.g. decimal numbers and negative numbers). Equation solving is commonly presented in school using the model of a balancing scale, which encourages balancing a positive (often discrete) number of things. Instead, we are constructing a simulation game, building on the number line and an electric circuit as models for equations. Our intention is to pilot this study and use pre and post assessments to see if this could help students in their understanding of linear equations with rational numbers.
