Abstract:
In today's development process at Volvo Cars, when testing and validating the functions and placement of interior sensors, a physical concept car is needed. This can slow down the manufacturing process and the production of concept cars is quite expensive. The 3D models of cars are produced early in the manufacturing stage, sometimes even years in advance. 

The introduction of a virtual environment would hence allow for these 3D models to be used for testing and validation of interior sensor placement and functionalities. A virtual testing environment introduces the possibility of creating synthetic data, virtual scenarios used for testing and validation. A virtual testing and validation environment has been created with the possibility to incorporate object detection to a camera sensor. This was done to see if a neural network, trained fully on synthetic data, could detect a real child seat placed inside a real car. By virtualizing a real wide field of view camera and using a lightweight neural network (Tiny YOLO v2) it was concluded that it is possible to detect a real child seat with a network trained only on synthetic data.
