Föreläsning för befordran till professor: "Wastewater treatment – from activated sludge and beyond"
A well-functioning wastewater system is fundamental for the protection of human health and environment. Wastewater has to be transported and treated in an efficient, hygienic and environmentally friendly manner. The most common way of treating wastewater, the activated sludge process, was invented more than 100 years ago and is based on biological processes. Modern wastewater treatment plants are still to a large extent based on the same technology but have developed to become more advanced to meet the challenges of today, namely increased urbanization which requires compact treatment processes, stricter effluent discharge limits for nutrients but also for micropollutants, demand for higher energy efficiency and restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions. During the last decades the understanding of the complex microbial processes involved has increased enormously due to the advancement of analytical tools and this has enabled the development of new, more efficient and less energy demanding or even energy generating treatment technologies. In this lecture I will give an overview of the wastewater treatment of today and where our research comes in and where it is heading in the future.
