"Urban land resources – perspectives from beneath"

Välkommen att delta när Jenny Norrman ger en digital populärvetenskaplig föreläsning om undermarksresurser i samband med att hon befordras till biträdande professor vid institutionen för arkitektur och samhällsbyggandsteknik.

About half of the world’s population lives in cities, and with continuing urbanisation this number is expected to increase. With high and increasing pressure on urban land, space becomes a scarce resource: we build denser, higher, at locations that are contaminated or require more complex foundations and if the economy allows, we locate suitable facilities underground.
The subsurface however, is not only a construction basis which provides physical space and shelter for infrastructure and the possibility to create a better surface living environment: it is a multifunctional resource. Apart from physical space, the subsurface can for example provide and store water, energy and materials, provide habitats for ecosystems, act as support for surface life, and serve as a repository for cultural and geological heritage. The subsurface can be associated with hazards, such as naturally occurring radon, industrial contamination, areas prone to landslides or soil subsidence. To maintain favourable conditions in cities and efficiently plan and maintain urban infrastructure we need to manage our land resources, including those hidden in the subsurface, in a strategic and fair manner.
In this lecture, I will discuss the role of the urban subsurface for achieving sustainable cities and present selected research activities that address some of the challenges and opportunities for urban land resources.
