Åsa Gren – Docentföreläsning

Välkommen till Åsa Grens docentföreläsning om ekosystemtjänster. Åsa Gren blir med sin docentur affilierad till avdelningen för Stadsbyggnad.

Abstract
Humans and our societies depend on the work of nature for our welfare and survival. However, although great progress has been made, the absence of an understanding of the importance of the work of nature in the urban sustainability discourse is still prominent. In this context, the ecosystem service approach has proven to be a constructive lens for illuminating the links between the work of nature and human welfare and for navigating towards a sustainable urban development.  Ecosystem services are the many and varied benefits that humans freely gain from the natural environment and from properly-functioning ecosystems.

Drawing on my scientific work, I, in this lecture, will:
a) show the importance of the work of nature for human wellbeing and sustainable urban development, through the quantification and valuation of various ecosystem services;
b) explain WHY the integration of ecosystem services into urban design and planning is an essential part of promoting sustainable urban development; and
c) illustrate HOW the integration of ecosystem services can be put into practice, through the development of frameworks, tools and methods.
