          Eligibility

          General entry requirements for bachelor's level (first cycle)
          Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

          Course specific prerequisites

          The student holds a valid certificate for Basic Safety Training, an approved medical certificate for seafarers, a valid passport and a valid Seafarer’s book. Exceptions to passports and seafaring books can be made after special review.

          The student meets the requirements for completed credits to study in the current semester. Exceptions to the promotion requirements may be made after special review.

          In order to complete On Board Training (OBT), the student is required to demonstrate sufficient knowledge and skills and to have an approach that ensures good maritime safety and good seamanship

          Aim

          The lectures are intended to prepare students for their on board training and provide students with the necessary knowledge of life at sea in order to adequately be able to assimilate the on board training. The on board training aims to educate / train students in the practical skills of previously obtained theoretical knowledge in operating conditions aboard merchant vessels in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention and to obtain the time at sea required by Swedish Transport Agency (TSFS 2011:116) to obtain certificate as an engineer officer.

          Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

          General learning outcome for all on board training
          - Master such practical knowledge, experience and skills necessary to serve as an officer on a merchant vessel.

          After completion of this course, the student should be able to:
          - Describe vessel's particular
          - Demonstrate knowledge of the vessel's various distress signals, emergency and safety procedures
          - Describe the vessel's fuel oil system and treatment of fuel oil - Describe procedures of bunkering
          - Describe lubrication system for main engine and treatment of lubrication oil
          - Explain how the cooling water system for the main engine works
          - Show a basic knowledge of maintenance work in the engine and apply safe working practices including the use of personal protective equipment
          - Describe the vessel's bilge water system
          - Describe the vessel's starting air system

          Content

          - Lecture, in order to prepare the student for future on board training
          - On board training, approximately 10 weeks

          Organisation

          The student is responsible for arranging his/her own internship if an agreement with the Maritime Training Institute (SUI) is missing or an existing agreement has not been followed by the student.
          Assessment take place during the lp 4 when students individually or in group meet examiner

          - Participated in the compulsory elements and submitted writing report according to the instructions on the course website

          0212, Part B
          - Completed at least 28 days of on board training
          - Shown completed, signed and stamped Cadet Report, paragraph 7 and 8 at least "yes" or "Partly".
          - Assessment report (competence of STCW requirements) of the On Board Training Manual is dated and signed by the supervisor.

          0312, Part C
          - Completed at least 75% of the planned time on board.
          - Shown completed, signed and stamped Cadet Report, paragraph 7 and 8 at least "yes" or "Partly".
          - Assessment report (competence of STCW requirements) of the On Board Training Manual is dated and signed by the supervisor.

          If the company assesses that the student shows such serious deficiencies in knowledge, skills or attitudes that there is a risk with reference to maritime safety, the examiner can with immediate effect decide that the student may not continue his/her On Board Training (OBT) on the ship in question. In such cases, the grade for the course will be a fail (U). The examiner, study counsellor and student draw up an individual action plan with the aim of remedying the student's identified shortcomings.

          The examiner can make exceptions on the number of days given the varied length of the internship period if other requirements are met.


          The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers about disability study support.
