Aim

The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge and understanding of intermodal transport of goods. The course is based on basic knowledge of transport logistics, cargo handling, and freight forwarding. During the course, the course participants' knowledge about the transport chain, combination of transport modes, transport informatics, and skills in MS Excel for evaluating sustainability in intermodal transport will be further developed.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Explain inter, multi, synchro, co-, transmodal transport of passengers and freight.

- Describe physical, financial and information flows in a intermodal transport chain.

- Explain application in combining different modes of transport within intermodal transport.

- Explain application of the three sustainability dimensions in intermodal transport.

- Describe the relationship between pricing and costs in intermodal transport.

- Show understanding of international/national laws in intermodal transport

- Explain sustainability in intermodal transport based on marginal cost and contribution of carbon dioxide

- Apply Excel for evaluating sustainability in intermodal transport

- Perform and orally present a scientific report.

- Explain application of transport informatics related to efficiency in intermodal transport.

Content

-Intermodal sea and air transport of goods; infrastructure, actors and their roles

- Maritime informatics; information flows, interoperability, data sources, ICT/IT systems, use of IT/ICT.

- Efficiency and sustainability in intermodal transport of goods

- Operational processes when handling goods within intermodal transport (sea and air freight).

- Transport economics within intermodal sea and air transport of goods.

The course is organized around

-        Project assignment including written report and oral presentation (mandatory)
