Course specific prerequisites
-Aim
The course provides knowledge and skills in law and regulatory compliance, with a focus on the areas of Swedish law and international conventions that are relevant to the role of an engineering officer. The economics component provides basic knowledge of ship chartering as well as how technical operations, bunker costs and relevant data are used to make operational decisions.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
Juridical learning outcomes:1. Identify and civil law from administrative and criminal law
2. Explain the relation between international conventions and national law
3. Explain and evaluate forms of associations within the shipping industry
4. Apply basic principles in contract and sale of goods law and to understand delivery clauses
5. Differentiate type of vessels and apply rules on ships nationality and register
6. Account for and apply rules on shipowners liability and workers liability
7. Account for function and liability in ship management
8. Apply basic regulations in Swedish and international employment laws
9. Monitor and control compliance in accordance with maritime security regulations
10. Account for the main features of salvage, lifesaving at sea and marine insurances
11. Apply relevant regulations regarding environment and work environment.
12. Relate to business ethics issues.
13. Relate to ethical issues in relation to employment law.
Economic learning outcomes:
1. Identify the main components of ship management and commercial management respectively.
2. Name the key markets within the shipping industry.
3. Describe the most important provisions of AVR and BIMCO Repaircon.
4. Define key maritime terms related to technical operations, repairs, and commercial management.
5. Explain the differences between the most common chartering forms and how costs are allocated between shipowner and charterer.
6. Explain how charter parties are structured and the practical function of voyage orders.
7. Explain how laytime is calculated and discuss how demurrage arises and affects costs.
8. Calculate how changes in speed affect bunker costs and apply this in simple optimization scenarios.
9. Apply the FIFO principle in the handling of bunker fuels and understand its impact on cost accounting and environmental reporting.
10. Prepare a basic technical operating budget, taking typical cost categories into account.
11. Apply relevant data and key performance indicators to make operational decisions in technical operations and commercial planning.
