Modular online course on Intellectual Property

Do you want to learn more about intellectual property rights, particularly with regard to patent protection and the commercialisation of inventions?

Starting this term the European Patent office offers all master’s students at Chalmers a free, modular and largely self-paced course in Intellectual Property rights and patents. 

The course is targeted at master’s students studying in fields such as engineering, where knowledge of IP is an important value add in many careers. The course consists of a carefully selected set of case studies, live sessions, self-paced modules and quizzes, a tutored forum and a final assignment marked by IP experts.

The course does not award credits, but successfully finishing the course yields a certificate from the European Patent O5ice.

The course contains five modules, each comprising 10-20 hours of course work:

  • Introduction to IP: An overview of IP rights, serving as a first encounter to the field.
  • Patent Essentials: What is a patent and what are the requirements to get a patent?
  • Introduction to Patent Information: Intro to patent information and its characteristics,
    and how to acess patent information.
  • Patent Information in Practice: Introduction to Espacenet and European Patent Register;
    use cases and exercises.
  • Developing an IP Strategy: Tapping the economic benefits from your ideas.

The course contains four live sessions (1,5 hours each) with renowned IP experts. The
course ends with a final exam on 24 May.
