Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling the requirements above.

Aim

Mechanics is a fundamental part of Physics. In this course we will introduce key concepts of classical (Newtonian) mechanics along with examples of applications. The goal is that students learn to develop a physical intuition and simple mathematical models of physical and technical systems.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

• appreciate the power and the limitations of classical mechanics to model a real physical system;
• decompose forces/vectors in different systems of coordinates and perform mathematical operations on vectors;
• write the equations for a system in equilibrium;
• calculate the center of mass of a simple system;
• know Newton's laws and derived laws and be able to apply them.
• know Kepler's law of planetary motion and be able to apply them.
