Gröna optiska kopplingsarkitekturer för datacentra.
The strategic relevance of the proposal stems from the urgent need of improving energy efficiency in data centers. The project aims at investigating and demonstrating green optical interconnect architectures for data centers, and specifically, targets a reduction of energy consumption per bit by at least a factor of 100 compared to the conventional solutions. Apparently, such a challenging objective cannot be satisfied by the incremental approaches that are being investigated today. Therefore, we are proposing a revolutionary approach based on passive optical interconnects (POIs), which caneliminate the usage of energy-consuming devices. We plan a 4-year project addressing both data and control plane, leading to a cross-layer design that can leverage optical transport to the greatest possible extent and hence allowing for reaching the lowest energy consumption per bit. The feasibility of the proposed POI architecture as well as the tailored green strategies will be demonstrated in the lab trail. As a first attemp to develop the POI based green optical interconnects, the proposedresearch may open a new research branch, which has a high potential to increase the visibility of Swedish research efforts worldwide. The expected research results can be of great importance to establish long-term competitiveness for the Swedish and globalindustry on photonics and datacom. Besides, it would also have a significant impact on the environmental sustainability.
