Eureka CELTIC: Energy-Efficient Radio Systems at 100 GHz and beyond: Antennas, Transceivers and Waveforms

Purpose and goal
The trend towards more and more advanced wireless applications will require a paradigm shift in the mobile network of the future. In the future, new higher frequency bands, over 100 GHz, to be made available and thus data speeds of up to 100 Gbit / sec. The current project thus aims to develop an antenna module and hardware integration platform for 100 GHz. An important focus is the problem of high energy efficiency, which is handled by integrating and co-designing antennas, filters, RF electronics in various semiconductor technologies and associated algorithms.

Expected results and effects
Our project ENTRY100GHz is straight in line with the development of the future ICT infrastructures. The energy-efficient active antenna array module developed within the project will support ultra-high date rate to multiple users and will be the basic building block for the future mobile infrastructure. The goal is mainly applications in wireless infrastructure (Beyond-5G) of 100 GHz band, but the same platform also supports other applications in security & sensors, imaging, industrial Internet-of-Things, automation etc.

Planned approach and implementation
The project has 6 work packages (WP). WP1 deals with System level study and formulating the system specification for B5G or 6G systems. WP2 deals with design of the low-loss antenna array and low-loss filter array module. WP3 will aim in co-optimization of DSP algorithms and RF electronics design. WP4 deals with development of OTA calibration scheme and energy efficient waveform. WP5 involves design of integration platform for integrating different building blocks and WP6 will handle project coordination and reporting. The project will be carried out over three years.
