Jingxiong Liu is a second-year student who has won the scholarship funded by Volvo Car Corporation for the two-year master study period. He had studied applied physics for 4 years at University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, which has a high reputation in the world. Because of his academic excellence, a high grade of TOFEL (111) and other personal characters, Jingxiong was selected by the scholarship committee.
Based on the pervious academic background, Jingxiong has enrolled in the master program named Embedded Electronic System Design at Chalmers. Except for attending on curricular activities, like lectures and equipped experiments, he usually spends another 2 to 3 hours to review and study by himself. After self-studying, Jingxiong always finds something interesting but not clear enough, so he makes the best of Q&A section of courses every week. In addition, he is used to mailing to his teaching assistants for help as long as question arisen. However, in his opinion, duration of study is not the criteria of its quality which depends on the efficiency. So, he also spends his leisure time on playing guitar and social activities.
Before the first summer vocation, Jingxiong contacted his supervisor at Volvo in advance and got suggestions on the field of summer projects. Although he hadn’t studied on vehicle engineering, based on his outstanding ability of logical thinking and self-learning, Jingxiong tried to concentrate on the technology of vehicle navigation system and active safety system during the summer job at Volvo. At the first month, he studied a lot about how to make models, the design of electronic sunroof, materials of internal parts, as well as communication and management. Thanks to his patience and enthusiasm towards the research process, Jingxiong managed to solve a problem which the regular staff struggled with for two years.
As the guarantee by the Volvo scholarship, Jingxiong came to Volvo corporation again to finish his master thesis project. Different from doing thesis project at school, without clear aims and schedules, Jingxiong decided to continue with his research project in his previous internship after well communicating with his supervisor. In the team of the department, there are around 30 regular staff and 10 students in 5 groups who are working on their master thesis projects. In the twenty-weeks period, students have to present their works on different stages and participate on the mid-critic at the 10th week. After the mid-critic, Jingxiong was invited by his boss to join their team after graduation, which is the dream of most of Chalmers students.
As an architecture student, although I could not copy the success of Jingxiong Liu, I still learnt a lot after interviewing him. It is the ability of self-learning that deserves me to develop myself. The process of architectural design is the process of studying references and using them in the specific way. And it is important for me to challenge myself to focus on the issues that I have not work on before. I believe we would surprise ourselves in the future as long as we have dreams.
