We study the whole lifecycle of buildings from their design and production to their use, including processes of renovation, preservation and transformation. While the primary scale of analysis is the building, we also consider its relationship to the surrounding context. The research field encompasses all types of buildings and activities while building on a long tradition of housing research at Chalmers.

Our research

Buildings need to be designed, used, and managed in ways that minimize resources use, reduce climate impacts, and support adaptation to present and future challenges. At the same time, they must meet people’s needs and contribute to their well-being. In doing so, they should support sustainable societal development by addressing the impacts of climate change, responding to demographic shifts, and strengthening resilience in times of crisis.

This research area examines the relationships between buildings and human activity, considering both their physical characteristics and the processes through which they are designed, constructed, used and maintained. It explores the interactions between architectural features, material conditions, resource utilisation, and how these relate to social and human dimensions such as behaviour, comfort, well-being, health, experience, and organisation.

Comprehensive Design Approach (what)

We take a lifecycle perspective on buildings, examining how design and material choices influence performance in use, particularly in terms

Interaction with Context:

We emphasise the relationship between buildings and their wider social, cultural, economic, and physical contexts, including the roles and contributions of key stakeholders in shaping the built environment.

Integrative Architectural Research (how):

Drawing on insights from architecture, environmental, and social sciences, we explore how the physical and organisational dimensions of buildings interact with human activities, with the aim of supporting well-being, comfort, and sustainable use over time.

Collaborations and networks

We work in collaboration with industry partners, public sector actors and governmental authorities. Two of Chalmers’ centres serve as important channels for knowledge transfer and collaboration.
