Most students begin with their existing computer or use the computer labs at first, and then decide whether they need to buy a new one.
What should I consider when thinking about buying a computer for my studies? Do I need a new one before I start?
Many people wonder whether you need to buy a new computer for your studies at Chalmers. In most cases, you don’t – most students start their studies using their current computer.
At Chalmers, there are also several computer labs used in teaching, where the software you need for your studies is available. There is also the option to stream or download certain programs to your own computer.
Once you have started studying, you will usually be able to tell whether your computer is enough. You can also get good advice from student mentors or classmates.
If you are still considering buying a new computer, your needs will depend partly on the programme you are enrolled in. For example, if your programme involves a lot of CAD work, you may need a dedicated graphics card. In general, it is a good idea to have a computer with a good processor and sufficient RAM.
