About specialisations, minors and the flexibility window

The structure of your studies gives you opportunities to shape your degree around your interests and ambitions. Depending on your programme, you may deepen your expertise through a specialisation, broaden your knowledge through a minor, or use the flexibility window for advanced elective courses or an exchange. Available options, requirements and application procedures vary, so always check the relevant webpages for details.

Specialisations

What is a specialisation?

A specialisation is a set of courses and a master’s thesis that lets you focus on a specific area within your programme. It is a way to tailor your studies towards the career, subject or competence you're interested in.

How do I apply to a specialisation?

It depends on the specialisation. In most cases, you choose your specialisation after you start your studies at Chalmers. Some specialisations require you to apply through UniversityAdmissions.se when you apply to the programme.

Check the website for the programme and specialisation you are interested in to find out which option applies.

What are the benefits of choosing a specialisation?

A specialisation gives you a clear and focussed path within your programme. The specialisation will be stated on your degree certificate, which can be valuable when showcasing your competences to employers. If you are considering a career in research, a specialisation can also help you build the knowledge you need to pursue a PhD.

Minors

What is a minor?

A minor is a 30-credit course package that broadens your knowledge, in areas such as entrepreneurship, personal leadership or sustainability. You may study a minor during the semester called “flexibility window”, and it is a way to add a new dimension to your degree.

Do I have to choose a minor?

No, a minor is optional.

How do I apply to a minor?

When you study at Chalmers, there will be a formal application process to apply to minors.

Note that minors may have prerequisites or a limited number of places. Not all minors are open to students from every programme, so check the minors page for details on which minors are available to you.

What are the benefits of choosing a minor?

A minor lets you broaden your academic knowledge by exploring a field beyond your main area of study. It can make you more versatile on the job market and help you stand out to employers looking for a wider range of skills. The minor will also be stated on your degree certificate.

Flexibility Window

What is a flexibility window and what choices can I make?

A flexibility window is a 30-credit semester during your second year where you do not take any compulsory courses. Instead, you are free to take advanced elective courses in your specialisation, study a minor, or go on an exchange programme.

Can I choose elective courses outside of the flexibility window?

Yes, in most cases. Depending on your programme and specialisation, there may be room for elective courses in other parts of your studies as well. Check your programme page for details on how your courses are structured.
