A key factor for the competitiveness of the manufacturing industries is to sense, and have the ability to act on, changes on the market with respect to environmentally friendly and lightweight products.
Thereby, high demands are placed on the manufacturing processes concerning machining and forming processes of high strength metal materials. The same circumstances also pertain to the composite industry, where the use of advanced composite materials is now increasing due to the high interest in lightweight design.
The idea of the research is to model the underlying mechanics in the involved processes in order to, by simulation, identify the most important process parameters and their corresponding values, thereby avoiding costly and energy consuming testing for reaching optimal production results.
The research is often canalized via the division’s involvement in Chalmers centre for metal cutting (MCR) and the collaboration with Swerea SICOMP.
