We are excited to welcome you to our department! Starting a new position - and possibly moving to a new country - comes with many things to consider. To support you, we have gathered the most important information you will need before your move and during your first weeks with us. As the department is joint between Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg (GU) you will find information from both universities.
Preparing before you move to Sweden
Before you move, please make sure you have arranged the following:
- Visa, residence permit and work permit
- Housing
- Childcare and schools
- Insurance
- First salary payment and bank account
For more detailed guidance, please visit the page International Staff Support - Chalmers if you are a Chalmers employee or International Staff Support - GU if you are a University of Gothenburg (GU) employee.
The site Move to Gothenburg offers practical advice, tools, and events to support your relocation. Here, you will also find up-to-date information about the housing market and guidance on where to search for accommodation in Gothenburg. Please note that you are responsible for finding your own housing.
Checklist first weeks in Sweden
Once you arrive in Sweden, there are some important steps to complete.
- Register with the Swedish Tax Agency (personal identity number)
- Register at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency
- Apply for an ID card
- Tax registration
- Set up a bank account
You can also seek assistans at Järntorget Service Center where you can get help using digital services, filling in forms and applications, order a new ID card and use the “Moving to Sweden” service.
Your accounts and access
As an employee, you will receive the necessary accounts to log in to various systems and services. For example, a Chalmers ID (CID) is used for several Chalmers systems, including the intranet, while a GU x-account is required to access the University of Gothenburg’s staff portal and other resources. Regardless of whether you are employed by Chalmers or the University of Gothenburg, you will receive both a CID and an x-account.
Information and resources
The Chalmers intranet and the GU Staff Portal are your main gateways to employment information, organizational structure, tools, support services, contacts, news, and events.
At our joint department, the Chalmers intranet serves as the primary intranet for all employees, regardless of whether you are employed by Chalmers or GU. It also provides links to the GU Staff Portal for employment-related details, which you can also access directly when needed.
Access to the Chalmers intranet requires a Chalmers ID (CID), while the GU Staff Portal requires an x-account. Once you have access, we encourage you to explore the Chalmers Intranet Introduction for new employees at Chalmers or Employment at GU at GU´s Staff Portal.
Please note: Use different browsers for Chalmers and GU logins, as you cannot be logged in to both at the same time.
