Research field

Increased evidence suggest that individuals may respond different to diet and lifestyle. However, it is yet largely unknown to what extent different lifestyle factors such as diet, medication, gut microbiota, physical activity along with genetic factors interact explains this difference. To make a shift towards healthier diet for all, there is a need to develop strategies for adaptations to meet the needs of the individual for optimal health. The aim of our research is to develop such strategies and evaluate them in human trials.

Diet plays a major role for health and is the main risk factor for development of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which cause more than 60% of deaths globally according to WHO. Improving global health and well-being is one of the 17 Global sustainability goals (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/health/). The target to reduce premature mortality from NCDs by one third by 2030 will require large efforts to change to healthier dietary patterns.

Despite existing knowledge on what represents healthy eating at a population level, up to 9 out of 10 consumers do not eat according to dietary recommendations. More efficient dietary strategies to promote health and wellbeing are urgently needed. Evidence is accumulating that individuals have different responses to dietary exposures. To make a shift towards increased consumer motivation to healthy eating, we are investigating approaches for personalized nutrition, suitable for different metabolic phenotypes, i.e. metabotypes, identified from integration of diet, metabolomics and gut microbiota data.

Our overall aim is to identify determinants of differential responses to diet and develop methods to identify responders/non-responders using metabolite biomarkers. Our aim is further to dissect the mechanisms underlying response/non-response to specific foods and diets. This will allow us to develop tailored strategies to improve the health outcome of foods for personal and public health. Metabotype-guided responses and diets also need to be tested against general nutritional advice in randomized controlled trials. Our vision is to develop tools which can be integrated in clinical practice to guide specific dietary advices as well as result in tailored foods for groups of individuals with similar needs within a 10 year perspective.
