No technology flies alone

Maria Grahn has seen technologies come and go, and come back again. This time, many have hopes for the hydrogen society and that it can become renewable. Photo: Malin Avenius.

After a visit to the Gothenburg Science Festival, Vetenskapsfestivalen, Maria Grahn left her job in advertising and went to school again. It was the seminar "Koka nubbe på en stubbe", with Lena Gustafsson, that made her want to work for a fossil-free transport sector. Since then, she has seen various technologies come and go. Now she believes that hydrogen is here to stay, but it is not the silver bullet that solves all problems.

Maria Grahn, Associate Professor, Maritime Studies, Mechanics and Maritime Sciences, has been Director of Chalmers Energy Area of Advance and was recently an expert in a governmental inquiry on phasing out fossil fuels. In Verapodden, she talks about the pros and cons of hydrogen, why it is so difficult to change technology and what she really believes about our chances of creating a sustainable energy sector.
