<h4>Solving extended electric fleet-size and mix-VRPs using column generation</h4>

<p>Abstract: Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs) are widely studied in literature. We address an extension to the classical VRP in which we consider a heterogeneous fleet of electric vehicles with an upper limit of operational time, with energy consumption for each vehicle computed with a vehicle dynamic model and with different types of loading and unloading. Additionally, customer demands may be larger than vehicle capacities, and we therefore allow for multiple trips and split pick-ups or deliveries between vehicles.</p>
<p>We propose a model formulated as a generalized set covering problem with resource constraints, which we solve with column generation in a heuristic algorithm concluded by a branch-and-bound method. Solving the algorithm in a parallelized environment, instances up to twelve nodes are solved in under an hour, and with obtained solutions that are either optimal or relatively close to the best theoretical optimum. Changes in the heterogeneous vehicle fleet for different operational time limits and magnitudes of cargo flow are investigated, showing that a fleet with fewer but larger vehicles are favored for large cargo flows or long operational times.</p>
