Sammanfattning:
Biomass is the most abundant renewable resource on Earth, and it holds the key to building a sustainable circular bioeconomy. Yet, much of its potential remains underutilized. My research focuses on screening diverse biomass resources and designing processes that preserve the inherent structure and functionality of natural compounds, while improving and tailoring them through biotechnological approaches.
By integrating biotechnology, material science, and industrial symbiosis we can transform biomass and industrial side streams into innovative biobased materials. This approach ensures that valuable resources are reused efficiently, reducing waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and other environmental burdens.
Using microorganisms and enzymes, we tailor natural building blocks for polymer synthesis, directly exploit natural polymers, and even engineer living materials with functions ranging from structural applications to health-related uses. Through the integration of biological functionality, circular design principles, and industrial resource flows, we aim to create new paradigms for material development that not only replace fossil-based systems but also contribute to solving pressing environmental challenges.
This work highlights how biomass, when combined with biotechnology and industrial innovation, can become the foundation for the next generation of sustainable materials and technologies.
