Abstract: In 2006 wind power supplied 3 % of European electricity demand. In 2026, the share of wind power is increased to 19 % with wind and solar power together supplying 30 % of the European electricity demand. Growing from minor to major component in the electricity system has not come without challenges.
Some challenges have been misconceptions while others have required changes to the wind turbine technology or the system in which it is integrated. Energy systems modelling has, and continues to be, one important tool to investigate integration challenges to wind power and propose solutions. But in order to address systems with gradually larger shares of wind power energy system models have also been subject to rapid development. The energy systems group at Chalmers have been part of supporting this development.
In this talk I will go through the major challenges to wind power integration over the last two decades and how energy system models have developed and been used to address these.
