Abstract:
Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have been under development for a long time, but still need better fuel economy, increased fuel cell longevity and drivability to be competitive alternatives to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. This thesis contributes to an energy-efficient transport sector by investigating the benefits of an optimal mission planner for heavy-duty fuel cell trucks during long-haul driving missions. Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is used to preoptimise vehicle speed, fuel cell power, battery power, battery state of charge (SOC) and refuelling decisions for a given driving mission. The mission planer is evaluated in a high-fidelity simulation platform by comparing a receding horizon controller, supported by the mission planer, to an unsupported receding horizon controller. It is found that the mission planner improves fuel economy and increases vehicle drivability in hilly areas.
