Underground infrastructure

Electrical cables and pipes for water, sewage and district heating are some of the types of underground infrastructure that are essential for the functionality of a society. However, it is very difficult to assess the status of the underground infrastructure. Development of reliable methods for determination of long-term performance is crucial for maintenance of the underground infrastructure. Our resources in this field are dedicated to assessing and improving underground infrastructure by means of developing new materials and new measurement techniques.

Most of the challenges in this active field relate to service-life assessment and maintenance. The development of new methods for non-destructive assessment is one of the research areas of interest. Furthermore, the underground infrastructures are made of polymers and metal-based materials. Research related to degradation of polymer materials and corrosion of metallic materials is of importance to sustainable infrastructure. Finally, innovative solutions for underground infrastructure are needed, i.e. combining two distribution networks into one.
