Abstract
Inside cells, certain proteins behave in interesting ways—coming together to form liquid-like droplets without any membranes. These "biocondensates" help organize the cell and control important processes, much like how oil droplets form in water. One such protein, called Ddx4, naturally separates into dense and critical dilute phases, much like oil and water do. Understanding this behavior helps scientists explore how cells function.
To study this, we utilize a microscope known as a holographic microscope. It allows us to quantify protein droplets without requiring any fluorescent labels, which can disrupt the system. By combining this technique with microfluidics, we can precisely measure how salt concentration affects the phase separation of Ddx4. This helps us build phase diagrams and understand the forces driving condensation at the molecular level.
