Abstract:
During their lifetime, galaxies go through different evolutionary stages which can be heavily influenced by their environs. Many galaxies have close neighbors, or are even parts of whole groups, so that interactions become important factors in how each of them develops: galaxy morphology is strongly shaped, gas and stars are redistributed, and star formation and black hole growth can be enhanced or suppressed by interaction processes. In this presentation, I will give you a bit of insight into why mergers are important for galaxy evolution on large and small scales.
