Denis Meledin, at Onsala Space Observatory, the Department of Space, Earth and Environment, presents his lecture for promotion to docent.

Abstract:
The THz frequency range hosts a number of spectral signatures of molecules and ionized gas which provides information about different chemical and physical processes taking place in the cold universe. Ground-based astronomical observations at frequencies beyond 1THz are acknowledged to be challenging for several reasons. The Earth's atmosphere allows such studies only at certain atmospheric windows. Moreover, the available receivers have to be simultaneously very sensitive and broadband. Over the last few years, a receiver based on the Hot-Electron effect in superconductors (HEB) has been the technology of choice for heterodyne detection above 1 THz.

In this presentation, I will give an overview of our latest achievement in design, manufacturing characterization and future perspective of THz receivers operating above 1 THz as well as receiver components.
