Abstract:
Fluidized beds, a technology that has been in development for over a century, has been a main actor in the history of metallurgical, pharmaceutical and energy industries, among others. Today, energy conversion and synthesis processes are striving to meet the challenges posed by the demands of the energy transition and the circularization of productive chains. Thanks to their flexibility, fluidized beds are gaining a place in the landscape of future industry as well, they take part in both the optimization and adaptation of existing processes, and the development of novel ones. Being the gas-solids dynamics intimately related to the heat and mass transfer phenomena, these have a direct impact on the reactor performance. This underscores the necessity for a comprehensive understanding of gas-solids dynamics in order to meet the current challenges.
In the energy sector, more difficult feedstocks are replacing the traditional fossil fuels, and operational flexibility has become mandatory. Additionally, solids cycles are being investigated for new applications, including chemical recycling, CO2 capture, H2 production and energy storage. This is resulting in reactors being adapted and redesigned to operate under new schemes.
This presentation aims to highlight the relevance of the ongoing fundamental research in the field of fluidization, and to exemplify how the development of advanced measurement techniques has led to the acquisition of previously unavailable knowledge, and to the development of processes that have the potential to reshape traditional conversion schemes.
Efter föreläsningen blir det mingel på avdelningen för Energiteknik.
