With the requirements put on healthcare infrastructure and the multitude of demands and criteria in each design project, it is a challenge to get it “right”, if at all possible. To address and deal with this situation the healthcare environment needs to be designed according to the best available research, practice and with processes open to innovation and knowledge development. One way of doing this is to search for research-based data that can be found in research papers and reports. One such report is EBD 2020 – Evidence-Based Design, Research to Support the Design of Physical Environments in Healthcare published by the Centre for Healthcare Architecture. Against this backdrop we discuss perspectives on the use of evidence in design and how this furthers the quality of the resulting designs.
