Sammanfattning:
Hospital-acquired infections, also known as healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), have become increasingly prevalent due to the growing rates of medical device and implant insertions. HAIs refer to infections that patients acquire while receiving treatment at a healthcare facility, encompassing various types such as catheter-associated urinary tract infections, surgical site infections, central line-associated bloodstream infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and infections associated with orthopedic implants, dental implants, and similar devices. To combat these device-associated infections, emerging nanotechnological approaches are being developed, employing metallic nanoparticles, nanocarbons, nanogels, and nanocomposites to prevent or combat cross-infections. In this lecture, I will discuss my contributions to the development of microbial-resistant surfaces, which have the potential to mitigate biofilm formation and prevent device-associated infections. The focus of the lecture will primarily be on graphene and its derivatives as coatings, exploring their ability to prevent biofilm formation and enhance biocompatibility. Finally, I will address the current knowledge gaps and propose future research directions in the field, aiming to construct microbial-resistant biomedical devices using graphene and its derivatives.
