Project overview
Mechanical properties of PET copolyesters (namely PET-1, PET-2 and PET-3) were studied. The project mainly focuses on the implications of rubber toughening on the impact and tensile properties of copolyesters. PET-1 is the main focus of this thesis, which is compared to other commercial reference copolyesters (PET-2 and 3). The tensile and impact samples are prepared by melt extrusion and injection molding. Upon conducting the tensile and impact tests, it was found that PET-2 achieved incrementally better impact properties at 15% rubber concentration whereas PET-1 was able to achieve a similar characteristic value at 20% rubber concentration. The tensile tests also reported similar results for PET-1 and PET-2, however, showed that the deformability tends to decrease at a higher concentration of the impact modifier. PET-3 showed exceptional plastic deformability in an unmodified state, which decreased as the rubber concentration increased. However, its impact properties were not affected by the addition of rubber particles. The morphological analysis showed the presence of nanoscale inclusions in the commercial PETs.
