Machining of stainless steels is notoriously challenging. With better understanding of the relationship between material properties of stainless steels and their machining behaviour advances can be made in development of tools and strategies for machining stainless steels. The thesis looks at four very different grades of stainless steel: austenitic (1.4404), martensitic (1.4028), duplex (1.4462) and super austenitic (1.4539). The aim is to identify the underlying properties affects their machinability. This is done by a material characterisation part and a machining experiments part which are later correlated.
