Title: Illuminating security: safeguarding optical network infrastructure with machine learning

Abstract:
Uninterrupted and secure operation of high-performance communication networks is a key enabler of the ongoing evolution towards a networked, information society. Critical network infrastructure that underpins the global Internet communications relies primarily on optical fiber networks as the only future-proof solution to carry massive amounts of data at extremely high rates over ultra-long distances.

Despite the tremendous significance, optical network security has traditionally been neglected. Times of growing hostilities reveal the pitfalls of such practice: optical network infrastructure becomes an enticing target of attacks, jeopardizing upper-layer services irrespective of the implemented application-level security measures. Challenges such as limited real-time monitoring, extensive sharing of physical infrastructure, deployment in unprotected environments, and the nuanced impact of tampering on optical signal parameters exacerbate the complexities of managing optical network security.

To improve optical network security, we have devised a range of machine learning (ML)-based methodologies tailored for detection of physical-layer attacks targeting eavesdropping and service disruption, alongside strategies for security-enhancing network design and operation. In this presentation, I will review our ML framework developed for identifying physical-layer attacks, examine the strengths and limitations of these methodologies, and discuss the road ahead for optical network security management.

Welcome!
