Title: From Communication to Sensing: Machine Learning in Optical Fiber Systems
Abstract: "In this lecture, I will present an overview of our work on machine learning for optical fiber communication systems, with a focus on the physical layer. I will begin with a tutorial-style introduction to end-to-end autoencoder learning, where conventional transmitter and receiver algorithms are replaced by jointly optimized trainable models. I then discuss how domain knowledge and physical insights can be embedded into data-driven approaches to improve data efficiency, performance, and interpretability. Finally, I move beyond communication-centric design and address the emerging use of deployed telecommunication fibers as environmental sensors. In this context, I highlight our recent results on machine-learning-based event localization and outline open challenges and future research directions."
