Abstract:
"Room for Housing and Care"
Room for housing and care encompasses a broad continuum from the private home to the dense hospital environment. Medical care, nursing, and related services are provided in very different settings: in ordinary housing; in special housing for elderly or for people with functional variations; and in somatic and psychiatric hospitals. Wherever care is provided, it is of great significance from both a social and economic perspective how the physical environment meets the needs of the care providers, the staff, and the residents and patients.
My research and teaching have revolved around the usability of spaces and the concept of home in different settings. I have related the theoretical underpinnings to normative and relational aspects of space. The target groups for my academic work have from the onset mainly consisted of elderly and other vulnerable people in need of care and assistance, e.g., in ordinary housing, eldercare settings, homes for people with functional variations, hospitals, forensic psychiatry, and intensive care. In parallel, my work with facilities management in the City of Gothenburg has provided me with significant insights and experiences and with an arena for knowledge exchange.
In my lecture, I will briefly present my experiences from publishing, teaching and supervision, research, and cooperation with academy and society, along with presenting some related theoretical work. To look forward, I will present my ongoing work, relevant research topics, and related societal challenges.
