The research conducted at the division is very broad, ranging from basic to applied research with a direct connection to societal needs. Our main research areas include computational mathematics, optimisation, biomathematics, statistics, and data science, and have a strong and active PhD program related to these fields. Our broad expertise and interdisciplinary focus have led to strong national and international collaborations.
We work closely with universities around the world, as well as with other departments at the University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and several of Chalmers’ Areas of Advance. Our researchers contribute to innovation and the dissemination of knowledge, not only within academia but also through collaboration with industry and the surrounding society. Our research projects have led to commercialisation and the founding of successful companies.
We organise two seminar series, one in computational and applied mathematics and one in statistics, with speakers from all over the world. Read more on our page Seminar series. Additionally, the department regularly hosts guest researchers, further enriching our research environment.

Computational mathematics
We teach and perform research on the design, analysis, implementation and application of numerical methods for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations.

Biomathematics and biostatistics
In the area of biomathematics and biostatistics researchers work on developing mathematical and statistical models and methods addressing various biological phenomena.

Mathematical optimization
Our research and teaching include mathematical theory and solution methods for various applications of optimization.

Mathematical statistics and data science
The group conducts research developing stochastic models and statistical methods.
