Akelius Math Learning Lab at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg is a platform for the development and research of mathematics teaching materials. The lab is a collaboration between the Akelius Foundation and Chalmers and is affiliated with the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Our work is based on close collaboration between teachers and researchers. Teachers employed by Akelius Math AB are responsible for producing teaching materials, while researchers at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg study key questions related to the development and use of such materials.

Background

Mathematical competence is a key factor in a country's technological and economic development. However, many children and young people around the world lack the opportunity to acquire fundamental knowledge in this subject.

At Akelius Math Learning Lab, we work to develop and study teaching materials covering approximately the first twelve years of school mathematics. The materials will be available in multiple languages, freely accessible, and usable both for self-study and in classroom settings.

Akelius Foundation has extensive experience in developing digital language courses, which are now used globally, particularly in refugee camps and schools with limited resources. Our goal is to provide equivalent support in mathematics and to create educational materials that also serve as a valuable resource for teachers worldwide.

We aim to create learning materials that provide new opportunities for young people to learn mathematics, including those without access to teachers.

Ongoing activities

Our goal is to have digital materials for all twelve grade levels published in English by the end of 2027. At present, complete materials for grades 1–3, as well as algebra for grades 6–9, are available in English at math.akelius.education. The materials are continuously being translated into additional languages. For example, by autumn 2026, the materials for grades 1–3 will also be available in Swedish and Arabic.

Teams

The digital materials are produced by our international team, with staff based in Gothenburg and Cyprus, most of whom have backgrounds as teachers across different levels of the school system. Hands-on learning activities are developed by teachers in Vara, Färgelanda, and Gothenburg.

Our research group includes faculty researchers, a PhD student, and a postdoc at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg. We also engage students who carry out thesis projects connected to the Lab’s activities.

Collaborations

We continuously test our materials in school settings through collaborations with Communityskolan in Tynnered and The International School of the Gothenburg Region. In addition, we have an extensive partnership with Vara Municipality to develop teaching methods that incorporate hands-on materials to support mathematical learning.

In our research, we collaborate with Linda Mattsson at the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Blekinge Institute of Technology and Éva Fülöp at the Department of Pedagogical, Curricular and Professional Studies at the University of Gothenburg.
