Does studying through English influence graduates’ career outcomes? A new CLS research project uses large-scale Swedish longitudinal data to examine the relationship between English-medium higher education and subsequent salary development.

English-medium instruction (EMI), where academic subjects are taught through English, has become a prominent feature of higher education in Sweden and internationally. Improved career prospects are frequently cited as one of its potential benefits, but there is still little evidence based on graduates’ actual labor-market outcomes.

The project will use Swedish longitudinal register data to investigate the relationship between participation in English-medium higher education and salary development after university. By following graduates over time and taking account of differences in educational and social background, the study aims to provide a more robust picture of whether – and under what circumstances – English-medium study is associated with subsequent economic outcomes.

The project brings together expertise in English-medium instruction, higher education internationalization, educational measurement and quantitative research.
