At Chalmers University of Technology’s School of Maritime Studies, you will find Sweden’s most extensive simulation center for education and research in the maritime field, and our collaboration with industry and society permeates much of the work we do.

We can contribute by making our research infrastructure available to your operations, and by establishing competence centers and research networks to bring together academia and industry around specific challenges and research questions.

Maritime Simulators

At Chalmers School of Maritime Studies, Sweden’s most extensive simulator center for maritime education and research is located.

Full mission bridge simulator

In our full mission bridge simulator, it is possible to conduct a complete simulation of the operations carried out on a real ship. Maneuvering can be performed in various weather conditions and environments, including in confined areas.

Cargo Operations Studio

The Cargo Handling Simulator develops training and cargo studies for onboard personnel, as well as terminal- and land-based professions. Using modern technology, it recreates real-world conditions regarding the technical interfaces for loading and unloading, voyage execution and market operations, as well as the communication interfaces between the ship, operator, customer, and supplier.

Nautical Operations Studio

Our Nautical Operations Studio (NOS) consists of six Kongsberg “desktop” ship bridges, each equipped with four 24-inch screens: two for visual views and nautical instruments, and two that can be used as radar or ECDIS. One bridge serves as the instructor station, while the instructor program can also be run on the remaining five bridges to create or conduct exercises locally on each bridge.

Global Maritime Distress Safety System Simulator

In our GMDSS simulator (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System), students have the opportunity to learn how to operate all GMDSS equipment on ROC- and GOC-equipped vessels. Call procedures, emergency, and safety protocols are practiced through various communication exercises.

Engine Operations Simulator

Marine engineering students spend a significant amount of time here training in the operation of various engine room systems. The simulator is also used in other areas of the curriculum, such as language training, control engineering, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and more.

Bridge Operations Simulator

Our bridge simulator from Kongsberg consists of five identical bridges. Courses in navigation, radar navigation, and anti-collision navigation are conducted here using ARPA, ECDIS, and maneuvering exercises.

Dynamic Positioning Simulator

Dynamic Positioning (DP) is widely used in the offshore industry to carry out advanced operations over extended periods, where high positional accuracy is required.

Workshops and laboratories

In our modern workshops and laboratories, our students learn technical professional skills through hands-on practice.

At Campus Johanneberg, there is also the Marine Technology Laboratory (MTL), which is operated by our partner division, Marine Technology.

At Campus Johanneberg, there is also the Marine Technology Laboratory (MTL), operated by our collaborative Marine Technology division.

Centre

At the maritime competence center Lighthouse, collaboration is conducted with a wide range of stakeholders.

Lighthouse – Swedish maritime competence centre

At the maritime competence centre, we collaborate with the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, the Swedish Shipowners’ Association, the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Västra Götaland Region, and Vinnova. We also cooperate with the Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS) through our research projects within Lighthouse.
