Chalmers Professional Education AB was established in 2010 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University. It has since then offered open and in-company educational programmes, primarily financed by the business community.
Due to severely deteriorating market conditions, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the business has quickly ended up in a financially vulnerable situation. As demand is not expected to return to a sustainable level in the near future, the Board of Chalmers University of Technology has decided to discontinue operations in Chalmers Professional Education AB. As a consequence, all employment and consulting assignments will be terminated. Ongoing educational assignments will be carried out as planned.
"The market situation has forced us into this rapid change, which unfortunately affects the employees of the company," says Kent Viitanen, chairman of the Board of Chalmers Professional Education.
While professional education financed by the business sector is drastically decreasing, the government's investments in lifelong learning are increasing, to meet public need for further education. The government-funded education initiatives will be managed within the framework of the University's educational mission.
“During the pandemic, we see that the government welcomes Chalmers' ability in professional education, and wishes us to contribute more and more. We respond to this, as we do to wishes that we increase the number of places in our undergraduate programmes in fields where there is a skills shortage”, says Anna Karlsson-Bengtsson, Vice President of Education and Lifelong Learning.
