"Educating the educators: Professional development of academics for internationalisation at home" is a project that was run by the Department of Communication and Learning in Science in collaboration with KTH, Jönköping University, and KU Leuven. The project focused on what is commonly known as internationalisation at home.
Mapping for understanding - review effects
The project aimed to map the efforts of Swedish higher education institutions in supporting teachers’ professional development to promote internationalisation at home, and to critically examine how these efforts influenced teaching practices. A particular focus was placed on internationalisation at home in engineering education in different countries, especially regarding the ways teachers’ internationalisation work affected student learning experiences.
Overall, the project sought to increase understanding of the central role of teachers in internationalisation and to provide effective support for their ambitions to internationalise programmes and courses. The findings suggest that such support can strengthen teachers’ confidence and engagement, contributing to a more inclusive learning environment, enhanced intercultural competence among students, and improved educational quality.
Financing
The project was funded by STINT, The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education, as part of a special call for proposals in 2022 for knowledge development on internationalisation.
The project was linked to one of the CLS research themes; Internationalisation in higher education and research.
