In July, WACQT hosted its fourth biennial summer school at Aspenäs Herrgård, gathering just over 60 PhD students for a week of intensive learning, networking, and skill development in quantum technology.
The WACQT Summer School is a cornerstone in building a strong quantum research community. It offers early-career researchers a unique opportunity to connect with peers and leaders in the field, advance their education in quantum technologies, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
Held every second year since 2019, the summer school provides advanced training beyond local university offerings, builds national and international networks in quantum technology, and prepares students for careers in both academia and industry.
This year’s program featured lectures by internationally renowned experts, including Michèle Heurs (University of Hannover), Joe Aumentado (NIST), Nathan Wiebe (University of Toronto), and Sarah Thomas (University of Oxford). A standout moment was a half-day workshop led by Anders Sahlman, focusing on how to effectively communicate quantum science to broader audiences.
- It was a great school week with active and enthusiastic PhD students and lecturers, taking place in a beautiful and relaxing environment. We were even lucky with the weather, with the sun shining during the outdoor social activities, says Peter Samuelsson, Director WACQT Graduate School.
The week included poster sessions, pitch talks, a career panel discussion, and opportunities to present research and receive feedback. Posters were displayed throughout the week and categorized by research area: quantum computation (experiment and theory), quantum communication, and quantum sensing.
Beyond technical training, the summer school emphasized soft skills such as presentation techniques.
Attendance is mandatory for WACQT-affiliated PhD students and the school contributes to the required 15 credits in quantum technology. It ensures that all students benefit from a shared educational experience and contribute to the collaborative spirit of Sweden’s quantum research community.
By combining cutting-edge science with skill development and community building, the WACQT Summer School continues to play a vital role in shaping the next generation of quantum researchers.
