The students feel safe, experience that they are treated with respect and are proud to study at Chalmers. This is shown by the results of this year's Student Barometer. A survey where students are given the opportunity to anonymously share how they feel and perceive their study environment.

This year's Student Barometer, a survey of students' study and work environment conducted jointly by the University and the Student Union, has now been completed. This year, 4,158 students responded, representing a total of 33 percent, an increase of four percent from last year.

‘It's fantastic that so many Chalmers students take the time to respond to the Student Barometer! The more students who make their voices heard, the stronger we are in our advocacy work. The results give us strength and direction, both in our dialogue with the university and in how we develop the Student Union to make the time spent studying even better for everyone‘, says Astrid Ehrman, Student Welfare Officer at Chalmers Student Union.

The responses are given on a six-point scale, where 1 means ‘Disagree completely’ and 6 ‘Agree completely’. To make the results more transparent and comparable over time, the responses are converted to an average value between 0 and 100.

As in previous years, the statement ‘I feel safe at Chalmers’ received the highest average score, 90 out of a total of 100. This was closely followed by ‘In my programme, we treat each other with respect’ and ‘I study on equal terms and with equal opportunities,’ which received an average score of 86.

‘Every response matters. The Student Barometer is the most important tool we have for continuing to work towards an even better study environment. The results from previous years have led to initiatives such as Chalmers Against Sexism and changes to programme structures‘, says Sara Thornadtsson Chavarria, Equiality Coordinator at Chalmers.

Study places and premises engage the most

The areas that engaged students the most this year were related to study spaces and facilities. This is a focus area that the university prioritises and is working on in the Project A unified campus at Johanneberg. Among other things, the new Technology Park has been inaugurated with fresh new study spaces, which was also highlighted as very positive by the students.

The results also show that workload and opportunities for recovery are areas where students give lower ratings and where further development is needed. However, there are some differences between the programmes.

What happens next?

‘Now the directors of programme, Student Guidance Counsellors and various sections of the Student Union will continue to work with the results. Did you miss out on responding to the Student Barometer? Next year you will have another chance to make your voice heard‘, concludes Sara.

The questionnaire is developed in consultation with the student union, with 30 questions remaining the same each year. These mainly concern the study environment, social aspects and inclusion.

  • The Student Barometer has been in existence since 2017.
  • It is emailed to all students once a year in January.
  • The rating scale is 1-100, where 100 is the highest average score.
  • Number of responses 2026: 33 percent (4,158 responses), an increase of four percent.
  • The response rate is higher among undergraduate students than master's students.
  • The survey takes about ten minutes to complete.
