Lars Ekberg is Professor at the Division of Building Services Engineering at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. He is now preparing a seminar with American researchers Paula Olsiewski, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and Andrew Persily, National Institute of Standards and Technology.

"Both are internationally recognised researchers in the field of indoor environment. They are experts in the interrelationships between factors that affect the quality of the indoor environment and have a special focus on how to develop rules and guidance for the industry in creating well-functioning buildings with a good indoor climate," says Lars Ekberg.

Why is the area important?
“We are affected by far-reaching and justified demands to reduce the use of energy and other resources. The construction sector is very important in this context. We therefore need to ensure good quality of the indoor environment while implementing strong energy efficiency measures - and it is not obvious how to do this. The quality of the indoor environment affects how comfortable we perceive the indoor environment, how we feel and how efficiently we work. The recent pandemic has also shown that it is a matter of human health and safety”.

“To get better at managing these aspects, we need to listen to people who have expertise and experience in this area. There is every reason to listen to our guests from the US. They have many years of experience in developing US national guidelines. They are also very good speakers”.

Who do you think should attend the seminar?
“Anyone who in any way works with or is responsible for the quality of the indoor environment, tenant satisfaction and the functioning of the building and technical installations should come. This could include researchers, designers, clients, managers, operating staff, or government officials, etc.”
