Mathematical sciences investigate the fundamental concepts and laws that shape our way of thinking – from abstract structures to concrete models of reality. Mathematics is central to natural science and technology, but also plays an important role in fields such as social sciences, economics, and medicine. It is a research discipline in its own right, with distinct theories, methods, and questions. Basic research in mathematics and statistics is crucial for future innovations – often long before they are visible in practice.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is a joint department of the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. It offers a strong and dynamic environment where research, education, and societal collaboration meet.

Our research
We conduct research and postgraduate education in mathematics at the highest level – from fundamental theory to practical applications.

Our education
The Department of Mathematical Sciences educates in mathematics at both Chalmers and Gothenburg universities. Here you can read more about the different programs and what similarities and differences there are.

Utilization
Find out more about our different utilization initiatives, activities and partnerships.

Seminar series
The Department of Mathematical Sciences hosts a number of recurring seminars. On this page you will find information about the different seminar series.

Mathematics library
The Mathematics library is a research library and the main subjects covered are mathematics, statistical mathematics and numerical analysis.

Work at Mathematical Sciences
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is Sweden's largest department in mathematics, with around 200 dedicated staff. We are a joint department between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, combining the best of two academic worlds in the heart of Gothenburg. At the University of Gothenburg, we are part of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
