The competence center TechForH2 will continue for another five years. Established at Chalmers University of Technology in 2022, the center has, following a successful first five-year period, received approval from the Swedish Energy Agency for a second phase starting in 2027. With a total budget of SEK 153 million over five years, TechForH2 will continue conducting world-class research on hydrogen for heavy transport.

“We are very pleased to be able to continue our hydrogen research for another five years. It is an area with great potential, but also many unresolved challenges. By deciding to fund an extension, Swedish Energy Agency, Chalmers, and our partners enable us to continue making important advances towards establishing hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels for heavy transport,” says Tomas Grönstedt, Director of TechForH2.

“We have learned several important lessons from the first phase of TechForH2, and it is very exciting that we can continue this important work for another five years. Much indicates that hydrogen will be part of the solution for achieving a fossil-free society, and TechForH2 provides an excellent platform where efforts from academia and industry come together and where we can truly make a difference together,” says Lucien Koopmans, Chairman of the Board of TechForH2 and Director of Technology Strategy and Analysis at Volvo Powertrain.

Continued Focus on Lowering Barriers

TechForH2’s activities are organized into five research areas: lightweight technologies for on-board storage, additive manufacturing, hydrogen sensors, fuel cells, and hydrogen society. For the next phase of the center, no major changes are planned.

“The focus will remain on our five research areas, as significant progress is still needed. Our work spans a relatively broad field, ranging from materials research and nanotechnology to the societal impacts of hydrogen. What unites us within the center is our ambition to find ways of lowering the barriers to hydrogen adoption. We have many highly skilled researchers and committed partners, giving us the capacity to deliver strong results,” says Tomas Grönstedt.

The partners participating in the center during the second phase are RISE, Volvo, Scania, Siemens Energy, GKN Aerospace, PowerCell, Insplorion, Johnson Matthey, Stena, and MannTek.
