During the summer, several media outlets, including Läkartidningen, have reported that Sahlgrenska University Hospital is initiating trials with 3D printing to reconstruct soft tissues for patients and insert the first implants on humans. The bioink used in the implants originates from research led by Paul Gatenholm, today Professor emeritus at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering , Chalmers University of Technology.

In Läkartidningen, Lars Kölby, professor of plastic surgery at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the University of Gothenburg, talks about the collaboration with Chalmers and Paul Gatenholm.

"It started when I got in touch with Paul Gatenholm, professor of biomaterials at Chalmers. He said that he had a lot of solutions, but no problems, and that "you at the clinics” have a lot of problems, but no solutions". He showed his bioink, it turned out that living cells could thrive in it and we continued on that road."

Since then, Lars Kölby and Paul Gatenholm, together with a team of six people, have come so far in their research that bioprinted implants will be tested on humans this autumn, writes Läkartidningen.

Paul Gatenholm who is also very pleased with the collaboration and how the research has developed, comments the news:

"It's fantastic to be able to contribute to this breakthrough after nine years of collaboration."
