Chalmers and the logistics company Greencarrier are entering a three-year strategic partnership to accelerate the sustainable transformation of the shipping industry. Greencarrier will support world-leading research and education in maritime environmental science, led by Associate Professor Ida-Maja Hassellöv.

The partnership aims to address urgent environmental challenges and support the shift towards more responsible and resilient shipping practices. It also reinforces Chalmers’ recently launched Ocean initiative, an overarching research area bringing together all marine and maritime research and education under one umbrella.
Driving science-based change
The overall goal of the collaboration is to strengthen Chalmers’ role as a key resource in the transition to sustainable shipping and to translate scientific knowledge into real-world change. Ida-Maja Hassellöv will lead both research and doctoral education focusing on the impact of shipping on marine ecosystems.
One of the key research areas will be to advance marine risk assessments by incorporating knowledge about the environmental effects of shipping, including the impact of shipping lanes – a field where current knowledge remains limited.
“I’m very pleased that the field of research I’m passionate about is receiving strong and long-term support through Greencarrier’s funding. This contribution enables us to expand scientific knowledge and, in the long run, promote healthier marine environments,” says Ida-Maja Hassellöv.
Long-term commitment to ocean health
Greencarrier’s funding enables long-term, socially relevant research and helps train the next generation of experts in the field. The initiative is also part of Greencarrier’s Blue Initiative, which supports projects aimed at reducing the environmental impact of shipping.
“By investing in innovative projects and strategic partnerships, we want to drive real change. We are proud to support Ida-Maja Hassellöv in her important work, both as a researcher and a valuable partner helping us better understand the oceans and our industry's impact on them. Her previous research has played a key role in shaping policy and driving change in the maritime sector,” says Josefine Widegren, owner and board member of Greencarrier Group.

Ocean
Our strong maritime heritage goes back to the establishment of the university. Today, most departments have research, education, and or utilisation related to the marine and maritime domain, contributing to the grand challenges associated with human utilisation of the oceans and marine resources. All in line with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
